What's All The Fuss About Whole Foods?

nutrition Feb 10, 2023

Allow me to explain...

My Instagram bio says I'm your go-to whole foods gal and I fully back this statement. I am passionate about the power of whole foods and how important they are for our body, mind and overall health. It's no secret there has been a steady (or perhaps rather rapid) increase in lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer and it seems we as a society are accepting these as 'normal' things to happen to use as we age.

Well I'm here to call bullshit. It absolutely is not normal. What it is, is common and I believe we can change that. And it starts with what we put in our body, which in my opinion, should be whole foods.

I'm going to break down what all the fuss about whole foods is, why they are critical to your health and how incorporating them into our diets can have a profound impact on our overall well-being.

So let's get to it!

What Are Whole Foods?

Whole foods are foods that have been minimally processed, preserving their natural nutrients and providing the body with the vitamins and minerals it needs to function optimally. Whole foods are the opposite of processed foods, which have often been stripped of their nutrients and have had synthetic ingredients added to them.

Examples of whole foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

The Benefits of Whole Foods

Whole foods are packed with nutrients that our bodies need to function at their best. These foods are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other important antioxidants and phytochemicals that can help to prevent disease, support healthy weight, and improve our overall well-being.

One of the most significant benefits of whole foods is that they are a great source of fiber. In western societies, it's actually scary how little fiber people get in their diet. Let me give you a tip...FIBER IS KEY!

Fiber is essential for digestive health. Let me repeat that so you understand how important it is....fiber is absolutely essential for our digestive health! It can help to lower cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of heart disease, and regulate blood sugar levels (and so much more!).

Fiber is also the main source of fuel for our microbes (trillions of little bacteria that live in and on our bodies). Feeding our microbes fiber = happy gut = happy body and mind. I will do another post (and probably many more about gut health...it's kinda my jam).

Back to whole foods, another benefit is that they can help with weight management. Whole foods are typically lower in calories and higher in fiber (there is that fiber again), making them a more satisfying and filling option than processed foods. This can help to reduce the risk of overeating which of course can promote weight loss.

Whole foods are also crucial for mental health and can have a positive impact on mood and energy levels. Ever heard the saying, 'good food good mood'? Well whole foods provide the body with the essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients it needs to produce neurotransmitters and hormones that are essential for mental well-being.

Incorporating Whole Foods into Your Diet

Have I convinced you about the imporance of whole foods yet? Maybe yes, but what about how?

Incorporating whole foods into your diet is not as difficult as it may seem. A good way is to just start small, perhaps by incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your meals and snacks. Think about what you can add to your plate, rather than what you can't.

Like carrots? Try carrot sticks and hummus for a snack. Enjoy broccoli? Toss it through some pasta. Love blueberries? Add them to your porridge or yogurt for breakfast. You don't have to change every thing, just small swaps can make a difference.

Another way to incorporate more whole foods into your diet is to swap processed grains for whole grains. Whole grains, such as brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat bread, are a great source of fiber (there it is again!) and other essential nutrients.

Finally, consider incorporating more legumes, nuts, and seeds into your diet. These are some of my favourite things to eat and cook with. They are so versatile, you can have them as a meal, add into baking or of course the easiest way is a handful of nuts for a snack!

These foods are a great source of healthy fats, protein, and fiber, making them a great option for those who are looking to build muscle, maintain a healthy weight or even balance your hormones.

To wrap it all up for you...

Incorporating whole foods into your diet is essential for overall health and well-being. Did I mention the importance of fiber?

Whole foods are rich in essential nutrients and can help to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, support healthy weight management, and improve mental health

As a health coach, I encourage my clients to prioritize whole foods in their diets and to avoid processed foods as much as possible. Keep an eye our for my next post where I'll talk more about processed foods (some things would absolutely shock you).

By consuming nutrient-rich whole foods, we can give our bodies the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients it needs to function optimally, promoting overall health and well-being.

Until next time,
